Renaissance Diamonds are chemically, optically, and physically identical to mined diamonds... Simply... A Diamond is a Diamond.
What Are Cultured Diamonds?
Cultured Diamonds are diamonds grown in a tightly controlled laboratory environment that emulate the conditions under which a mined diamond forms deep under the Earth's surface. Beginning with a diamond seed and carbon source, extreme heat and pressure are applied so that a diamond grows, atom by atom, on the seed. The result is a rough diamond that can be cut and polished for use in fine jewelry just as a rough diamond mined in nature.
Are Cultured Diamonds Real Diamonds?
Yes. Both mined and cultured diamonds form under the same conditions and in the same timeframe. Both have the exact same physical, chemical and optical properties. They have the same hardness, specific gravity, refractive index and dispersion. They are cut and polished using the same techniques for identical sparkle, brilliance and fire. The only difference between cultured and mined diamonds is their origin.
How do Cultured Diamonds Compare to Diamond Imitations?
They don't. Diamond imitations like CZ or diamond-coated materials are not diamonds. These imitations are referred to as "simulants" and do not share the same properties, features and characteristics as diamonds. They are polished and graded differently and, most importantly, do not share diamond's value, beauty and scintillation.
Are Cultured Diamonds Considered "Synthetic"?
No. By definition, a synthetic is the combination of different components to form a new compound. No synthesis takes place in creating Gemesis Cultured Diamonds.
How Are Cultured Diamonds Graded?
By the same "4 C's", as mined diamond. Cut, Carat, Clarity, and Color.
How Can I Tell the Difference Between Mined and Cultured?
Gemesis and Renaissance are committed to maintaining supply chain integrity. All diamonds over one-quarter carat after polishing are laser inscribed on the girdle. Additionally, the diamond certification will state the origin as being the Gemesis Cultured Diamond, along with the certificate and growth number.
What Colors are Currently Available?
The yellow to orange range is the current focus, with pinks and blues coming early in 2008.
Why Concentrate on Fancy Colored Rather than Colorless Diamonds?
Consumer demand... colored diamonds are hot! Unfortunately, only 1 in every 10,000 carats of diamonds mined are fancy colored, and the source and availability are unpredictable. Because of this, they are extremely expensive and unobtainable by anyone but the financially elite. Cultured Diamonds offer consumers affordable luxury at a price that is accessible to a much broader consumer audience.
